RUST

To re·i·fy: make something abstract more concrete or real.

The Oxford Dictionary characterizes the American Rust Belt by its “by declining industry, aging factories, and a falling population”. This narrative rings so loudly in my ears whenever I hear the reaction from someone when I say I am from southwestern Pennsylvania. RUST aims to share a quieter picture, one that explores the beauty in detail of the Rust Belt and Appalachia, reimagining tragically fraught stereotypes and reifying a more authentic portrait of my home. These photos are from my time living in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky, and traveling in West Virginia taken between 2012 - 2016.
